In October, Beloit College participated for the first time in Wisconsin’s four-day statewide Wisconsin Science Festival. Members of Beloit’s science faculty welcomed the public to the Sanger Center for the Sciences as visitors learned about nanotechnology and exciting research underway at Beloit to discover new antibiotics from soil bacteria.
Beloit announced in December that the women’s tennis program would be discontinued. Roster size and waning interest were cited among the reasons. Beloit now has 18 athletic teams: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, softball, and volleyball.
Beloit College has received a $250,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation in support of the Channels initiative, an essential part of the college’s new strategic plan. Set to debut this fall, Channels are themed learning experiences that orient and prepare students for their futures through advising, suggested courses, clubs, organizations, events, internships, field experiences, and professional networks.
In 2018, “The Irish Gambit,” an essay by Professor of English Shawn Gillen appeared in New Hibernia Review, a journal of Irish studies, and was named a Notable Essay of the Year in the 2019 collection of The Best American Essays, edited by Rebecca Solnit.
Nobel Prize-winning economist James Heckman served as Beloit’s Upton Scholar-in-residence this fall. Well-known for his work in econometrics, labor economics, and education economics, Heckman is a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Chicago where he directs the Center for the Economics of Human Development.
Members of the Buccaneer baseball team were in the regional media spotlight this fall for their energetic participation in the Hackett School’s Lunch Buddy Program. Since 2015, Beloit players have volunteered to pair up with an elementary school student for lunch, friendship, and support. This year, 25 Beloit baseball players participated as lunch buddies.

Lu Going’20 promotes WBCR as a staff member of the station and co-hosts “Lucid Dreams” a show that features post-punk, experimental/ psychedelic rock, and surf punk. “My favorite part about working at the station is being able to collaborate with wonderful people that are as passionate about music as I am,” Going says.
